Parachute Jump, aquatint with chine collé, 20 1/2 x 17 3/4 inches (image), 26 x 22 inches (sheet), 2021, edition 25
In this new print, Steiger returns to a favored subject of his, the Parachute Jump at Coney Island, NY. The structure that was initially built as a ride to attract thrill-seekers, remains a part of the cityscape; a beloved reminder of a bygone era. The artist has chosen a dramatic viewpoint, gazing up at the stark silhouette against a horizonless sky. It is monochromatic in the way a memory often is, reminiscent of another time, sharp in detail yet not beholden to context.
William Steiger received a BA in Art from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an MFA in painting from Yale University. He is the recipient of numerous grants, fellowships and awards and his work is included in countless private, public and corporate collections. Steiger has had more than 35 solo exhibitions worldwide including New York, Seoul and Tokyo. Hudson Hills Press published a monograph of his work, featuring more than 200 images and essays by 13 contributing writers. Steiger currently lives and works in New York City.
